  1. Glad someone else seems disgruntled about this untasteful release. I'm incensed this is what they presented as "completed" off of $75k of backer money. Your commentary basically confirms some of my thoughts and writing about this game.

  2. THERE IS A TLDR LOL (I just had a lot I wanted to shout into the void of the internet)

I've heard nothing but praise from most sources regarding this game, but from what I've seen from streams (CyanYoh in particular streamed it and I passively watched for a bit), I could immediately tell this game was not for me and after watching this speedrun I've confirmed my thoughts on it. A note is that I want to like this game, but I feel like a lot of things are lacking and they probably won't get better if things aren't said.

As far as games go, I consider myself remarkably easy to please, often times a single thing if done well can salvage a game for my personal enjoyment. This game might to 3 things well: voice acting (which is a minor enough thing and something that I personally do not care about at all, considering many of my favorite games growing up had minimal to no voice acting. Also, I've been an avid reader since I was 5), character design (which is another minor thing for me and this game isn't astounding enough in this aspect to sell me on characters from just the design), and story.

So now I'll briefly explain why I didn't like the story. A bit of background is that I love video game storytelling. My personal favorite way to consume stories, simply because the connection to the player is much greater than other mediums. It's incredibly easy for a game to get me with its "hook." However, this is one of the few games that I've cared about where the story just doesn't seem to have a good hook, which is concerning enough to me due to a long history of reading books/games that I really do not think it's worth seeing if it gets better (because I know for me personally, it won't. At least not significant enough to justify adding this game to the long list of games that I will play).

Having an acceptable hook for my standards is extremely easy. The only caveat is that it has to happen at the beginning of the game. I just need something, sell me on a relationship between a few characters, maybe the world, a conflict, etc. But this game doesn't seem to have that. I feel like character bloat has a large amount to do with it. I really enjoy FE stories (especially the older ones) because they intentionally limit the cast in the story for permadeath reasons, but it also means that we have a more intimate view on a view important characters. It works well for FE because the story will play out for itself due to your interactions with the gameplay. However, this game tries to do an FE style and also standard rpg style at the same time. So in the end there's just too many focal points for an FE approach and too may characters for a traditional rpg approach. On top of this, the "bonds" having no real merit in gameplay barring one item makes them utterly pointless. It takes a lot of effort to write them that could've been put into much more important areas, but instead we see where the priorities lie. It's just overall disappointing.

I will admit that I may be at a point in time where it's difficult for me to fairly judge game though, considering the vast amount of super high quality games I've played recently, especially in regards to music and story. Over the past week or so, I've been playing The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky (it's a trilogy but I've only played the 1st and 2nd game so far) for like 10 hours a day every day (except today because I figured I could use a rest day due to emotional exhaustion and chapter 8 of the second game being a bit unfair). So what I mean to say is that I've only really interacted with Dark Deity while this incredible series has been on my mind, so it's really probably not fair to Dark Deity (like seriously I've cried every day for the past week playing the second game in the series including today because I wanted to watch a scene in isolation 3 different times. I totally didn't expect to get this hooked; I knew absolutely nothing about the series going into it, only buying the 1st game on sale due to a recommendation without reading the description or anything [which as a side note is really fun to do in general])

tldr; the story was gimped from the start due to the decision to try to incorporate all the characters into it, leading to excessive bloat. It's a game that I'm predisposed to not liking much, and I don't have the patience for it at the moment.

  3. Oh my god, your Daft Punk mask is super badass, though I dislike that it makes your voice sound muffled. If it weren't for that,. it would be the coolest youtuber gimmick I've seen in a while. Maybe you should autotune your voice for the authentic Daft Punk experience, hahaha

  4. for anyone who feels turned off of this game from this video, keep in mind that he forsakes his entire army to devote all the resources into one unit. Spreading your resources out over a full cast like a normal player results in a very enjoyable, rewarding experience, I find. It's definitely not good game design that this is possible, but as long as you don't sell everything you own to buy upgrades for one unit, nothing even remotely close to this will happen.

  5. Gotta agree with your contrasting of this game and Vestaria Saga. Despite its sub-par visuals, Vestaria Saga managed to be a great game through its consistently interesting map design. Every map had unique side objectives, hidden events, and methods to disincentivize strats like turtling and juggernauting. Meanwhile this game presents a series of massive open plains, where the gameplay consists of slowly dragging your units towards an endpoint and occasionally fighting a somewhat interesting boss. Even the enemies felt more interesting in Vestaria Saga than in DD. Vestaria Saga enemies often had unique skill sets, weapons, lines and portraits, while this games' enemies are essentially just stat blocks deployed en masse. Not trying to completely rag on this game, but playing it just got so mind numbing towards the end, and Vestaria Saga already proved how good these indie FE-likes can be.

  6. This game doesn't scream rushed to me, it screams 'casuals who decided that they were going to fix all of the problems with Fire Emblem while not understanding why the game is designed the way it is'. This game was designed by people who played Fire Emblem at the easier difficulties and enjoyed the experience, but doesn't get why the game made the decisions it did. They were probably mildly annoyed, like most casuals who play Fire Emblem-style jRPGs, at the permadeath, the fixed promotions, the low level and stat caps, not being able to regularly move at your own pace, enemy placement, low but not negligible chances of player crits outside of stuff like Killer Weapons, and terrain. and lack of common, defensive equipment.
