Sloane has negative hesitation in offing her multiplying fathers as they are but a speedbump in Irving’s quest to dethrone Varic. Though no sooner does he succeed does Akmenos and Empyrean enact their endgame plan and drag them into a warped realm where purple prevails and their attire is swapped with beach gear. That last bit may have been my fault though. 🙂

Despite the lack of sunscreen in this apocalypse, our heroes rise to the occasion and fell this 90’s fashion victim for good and all. It’s a bit of an anticlimax, really.

As much as I enjoyed playing through this on stream, Dark Deity’s a pretty average game in most respects. Its attemps to like modern FE only run skin deep as once you uncover the core gameplay loop you find that there’s not much to it at all. Map in and map out, you do basically the same thing, beat the same enemies, listen to the same repetitive critical and level up quotes with only window dressing as a plot for most of its runtime. There’s glimmers of a real game here and there, but they’re slathered in an overall mediocre experience. If you’re looking for a game to turn your brain off to then this could do it for you with its randomizer features but, for someone like me, I felt that just isn’t enough to sate my appetite. It’s just an okay meal, but I’ll snack on something else when I’m done.

The DLC is up next! Don’t expect to be excited – it’s hardly worth the $10. Thanks for watching.

  1. oh, summer alden's a cutie! i can forgive almost any game if you give me a cute enough magic guy. (for a game that seems to shy away from "sexy" – or what you could call "sexy" in an out-of-context screenshot – some of the summer designs surprise me.)

i'm sure i'll give the game another play at some point – use benji 📝 – and as times goes on i'm likely to forget or throw away my grievances, but the same can be said for the things i liked. the cast could have bee trimmed severely. the animations are fine, but the dissonance between them and the character art feels particularly noticeable (alden, so tall! everyone's so boxy, too). i agree with your "skin deep FE" comparisons, and i'd rather drop $20 for Vestaria Saga (or not spend money at all on my legit copy of TearRing Saga). hell, Langrisser has my FE-itch these days.

  2. My takeaway is that it's indie Awakening. It's okay I guess, but there are better options out there; and the story is all over the place, just bringing you from one locale to another with only minimum sense and logic connecting them.

However, my biggest grievance is the very sparse attention given to the small details. Map cutscenes only consist of walking, warping, poofing into and out of existence, and screen flashing, and with no sound effects the whole time; CGs are nice, but they can't carry the entire presentation alone. Map hazards and map changes have no feedback, things just quietly happen when a marked square is occupied (wouldn't it have been cooler if the fire dragon actually breathed fire instead of just removing HP from the units in the marked zones?). Once a map starts, there's hardly any dialogue except from rescued people and in-game stuff telling you about map events. There are no boss convos, and they don't even get crit quotes; I feel the last few bosses with their non-zero chance to frequently crit could've really used some crit quotes.

This was their first game, right? Then here's hoping that they take what they've learned from this and use it to make future games that are more than just okay.
